PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The man found guilty of kidnapping his own daughter and causing a standoff in Altoona last year was back in court today to be sentenced.
Tex Ortiz will spend eight to 22 years in prison.
In May, Ortiz was found guilty of kidnapping and interfering with the custody of a child. He was found not guilty on charges of concealing the whereabouts of a child.
Ortiz is accused of taking his daughter from Wilkinsburg to Altoona a week before Christmas last year.
The issue had been the custody of his then-2-year-old daughter, Jaleeyah.
Ortiz claimed during his trial that he was never given formal notice that he did not have custody of his daughter, and that fear of an increasingly hostile relationship with the family of the girl’s deceased mother drove him to flee.
He ended up in Altoona where after a lengthy standoff with the SWAT team, the child was found safe.
The baby’s grandmother was in court today for the sentencing.
