READING, Pa. – While the apprehension of a fugitive mom from Berks County went smoothly, her return across country to face justice appears to be a different story.
Authorities said Wednesday that Maria Cabrera-Gutierrez is fighting her extradition from Washington state, where she was apprehended Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours after her case of alleged parental abduction was featured on national television.
“We will be put in a position where we will need to obtain a governor’s warrant to extradite her back to Berks County,” District Attorney John Adams told 69 News.
Cabrera-Gutierrez is accused of fleeing Berks County with her two sons, one of whom she did not have sole custody, in 2014.
The 4-year-old boy, Daniel Markus, was reunited with his father in Washington on Tuesday, after being apart for nearly three years.
Officials said they are working to reunite the other boy with his father, who lives in California.
